ATEMOS-PAGNINNO

ATEMOS-PAGNINNO is an initiative that combines textile craftsmanship and social economy to promote the skills of migrants, particularly those in precarious situations or without papers. Created in 2016, the ATEMOS workshop (Atelier pour un Monde Solidaire, or Workshop for a United World) offers a space for exchange and skills development, where participants can develop their talents in a collective setting, while advocating for regularization through work.

Since March 2020, the women involved in the ATEMOS project have been working hard to support the community by using their skills to make thousands of masks. In return, some people have decided to support them by making donations and providing fabric, including the King Baudouin Foundation, the CAL in the province of Liège, La Bobine ASBL, the Liège Training Center, and others.

The workshop activities include making clothes, textiles, and various accessories, such as bags, bibs, puppets, and headbands. The participants creations, often made from recycled or local materials, are presented at events and offered for sale. The profits are shared among the participants, highlighting the solidarity and collaborative nature of this project.

In 2020, the PAGNINNO (Pagne et Innovation) project was launched to promote the use of African fabric in textile manufacturing. This initiative celebrates cultural diversity through original designs, while raising awareness of the craftsmanship skills of migrants. By incorporating elements from different traditions, PAGNINNO helps raise public awareness of the cultural richness of African diasporas.

Beyond its artisanal aspect, ATEMOS-PAGNINNO is also a political and social tool. It serves as a platform to raise awareness of the cause of migrants and to explore new avenues for regularization through employment. The exchange of know-how between participants, combined with supportive guidance, helps to break down social isolation and boost the self-confidence of those involved.

ATEMOS-PAGNINNO is committed to promoting the independence and integration of migrants through concrete and inclusive activities. Its objectives include:

  • Promoting textile and craft skills:
    • Train participants in sewing techniques and the manufacture of various items.
    • Showcasing the traditions and expertise of African diasporas through creations using African fabric.
  • Strengthening autonomy and solidarity:
    • Provide a collaborative learning space where participants exchange knowledge and help each other.
    • Share sales profits among members to support their economic integration.
  • Create opportunities for visibility:
    • Present the creations at events to raise public awareness of cultural diversity and the realities of migrants.
    • Offer high-quality products while promoting ethical and sustainable values.
  • Advocating for regularization through work:
    • Using the workshop as a political tool to give migrants a voice.
    • Defend the idea that the social and solidarity economy can be a viable solution for fair and equitable regularization.

Transportation costs (10 euros per day worked) are paid to participants, and after sales, profits are shared among participants.

Con ATEMOS-PAGNINNO, Le Monde des Possibles demonstrates that creativity and solidarity can be powerful drivers for social inclusion and the defense of migrants rights.

I’m Thacienne, member of the sewing workshop at La Voix des Sans-Papiers in Liège. I am one of the people who took the initiative to make masks to protect ourselves and those around us from the scourge of COVID-19. COVID-19 is shaking up the world.

My name is Khadija, I am the mother of five children: two had to stay in Africa and the other three are here with me in Liège. I have been in Belgium since 2011, without papers. I live with other mothers who are in the same situation as me. Together, we sew.
