Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants

The Linguistic Integration of Adult Migrants (LIAM) project, supported by the Council of Europe, is an initiative that provides volunteers and professionals with a tool specifically designed to support adult refugees in their language learning. Translated into seven languages, this tool offers practical resources to meet the specific needs of migrants in their social and cultural integration.

Since its presentation in Strasbourg in 2018, the project has trained teams and volunteers in its use, with dissemination activities organized by Le Monde des Possibles. These training courses, structured in several phases, include an in-depth analysis of the tool and practical workshops to promote its adoption. In 2021, this project incorporated workshops on multilingualism, enriched by practical fact sheets and the recording of a podcast, to explore intercultural and linguistic issues in a European context.

Beyond language learning, LIAM reflects an inclusive and innovative vision of integration, where language becomes a vehicle for dialogue, mutual understanding, and resilience for adult refugees.

In 2018, the dissemination of the tool was structured in two phases. The first consisted of an in-depth analysis of the tool within a working group, highlighting its potential and limitations. The second phase focused on training the team and volunteers, providing them with the skills they needed to use the tool optimally. This experience demonstrated that the tool’s effectiveness depends on rigorous educational support.

In 2021, a new call for projects made it possible to expand the use of the tool by organizing training dedicated to interpreters from the Univerbal project and mentors from the 109 project (now Un, deux, Nous). This training concluded with a workshop on multilingualism, enriched by the creation of additional practical fact sheets and the recording of a podcast available online: Découvrir le podcast sur le multilinguisme.

LIAM offers a structured approach to supporting adult refugees in their language learning journey, using proven tools and inclusive practices. This project aims to:

  • Strengthening the skills of support staff: Training teams and volunteers in the use of an educational tool designed for language support.
  • Supporting the integration of adult refugees: Providing tailored resources to facilitate language learning and social inclusion.
  • Promoting multilingualism: Raising awareness of the benefits of multilingualism through workshops and complementary tools.
  • Creating spaces for intercultural dialogue: Highlighting linguistic and cultural issues to strengthen mutual understanding.
  • Promote collective productions: Encourage the creation of educational resources such as practical fact sheets, podcasts, or interactive workshops.

By combining training, awareness-raising, and innovation, LIAM helps build bridges between cultures and empower refugees.
